I didn’t want to make my Facebook Response post any longer than it needed to be, so here’s the letter.
Dear Facebook,
I’d like to start by introducing myself, since proof [of my identity] seems to be the heart of the issue we’re currently having. My name is Dark Angel. This is my full, legal & [most importantly] real name. On April 11, 2009 you disabled my account for the 2nd time for the same reason it was disabled the 1st. Yes, this has happened once already. November 17th, 2006 my account was disabled for the 1st time, and the heart of the issue being that you all (or whomever was moderating my profile at the time) believed I was using a fake name. Almost 2 and half years later, we’ve comeback to the same crossroads.
The 1st time this issue came up, it was resolved almost as quickly. It took 3 days to resolve this the first time. I was asked to provide proof of my identity, did so, and on the 20th of November 2006, I got my account back. The 2nd time this came up, I had a hunch that it was the same circumstance as before, and thus decided to address it in the 1st email I sent to regards to having my account disabled on April 11th, 2009. This time however, I was met with much more resistance; in fact it was an entire week before I heard anything from Facebook regarding the claims I’d made about the 1st incident or my offer to cooperate in helping to close the issue as soon as possible. I was told by a Facebook Team member that fake names violates the T.O.U. and in short, I can’t use Facebook if I don’t play by the rules. I was also told that is I supplied proof of my real name, I could have my account back.
Most people are skeptical of my name, and understandably so, it’s not common. But it’s no more fake than the sky is blue, or the ground is walked on. So I sent a reply the next day quoting responses from the 1st time this incident occurred and even sent the same proof I used last time to validate my name then. A tact that seemed simple enough. And you know as well as I, that that should have been the end of this issue. Considering I was offered my account back upon providing my real name, I can’t fathom why things aren’t fix. However between then, and the next email I received from Facebook, I wound up sending several more emails as I impatiently waited for some response. These emails all contained the same proof I’d provided to date (my college ID & a copy of my name change record w/my birthname whited-out), the same offer of any additional cooperation if needed, and a simple question. If and when I do get my account back, will I have to deal with this again? Because considering I’ve always been compliant with the terms of use, and all the information I’ve provided to date has been honest and truthful, I can’t understand why I’ve been blocked in the 1st place. Something I also highlighted in the emails I have sent prior. I didn’t receive any response until May 4th, 2009 in which I was told the Facebook Team was on the case and would get back to me as soon as possible.
Since then I’ve heard nothing back from Facebook regarding my account. So, I’m writing, cause I gotta know, just why has my account been disabled for a 2nd time from the same account? Certainly it can’t be for a fake name, as I’ve already proven I don’t have one & if the criteria I’ve submitted hasn’t been suitable, you all have not been proactive in addressing what would be considered substantial proof. To date I haven’t violated any of the terms of use past or present. I’ve complied with everything Facebook has asked in regards to addressing this issue. And despite all that, I’m still blocked from Facebook. For what reason am I being discriminated? Do you disapprove of my name? Or perhaps you have a problem with the religious beliefs you think I’m affiliated with or represent? Or do you just not like a black guy named Dark Angel? Seriously, I want to know. You’ve taken 2+ months to not reinstate my account; surely you have 2 minutes to answer a simple question?
In addition to this letter, the envelope I have sent also contains a copy of my driver’s license, 2 different college IDs (from 2 different colleges I have attended), a bank statement, a copy of my name change document (with my birthname whiteedout) and various emails we have sent each other in regards to this matter both in 2006 & 2009. If this does not prove I am who I say I am, then by all means, please do not hesitate to tell me what more proof would be considered legitimate in verifying my identity. I would like my account back as soon as possible, and if it’s not too much trouble, I’d like some sort of contact I can talk to in the event that this happens again, because this whole ordeal is pretty ridiculous.
Sincerely,
