I Don’t Like Green Eggs & Cosplay

I vaguely remeber a rare time where nobody cared what I wore to an anime convention; or any other random gathering for that matter. Yet as the years have gone by, my colleagues have grown increasingly more and more fond of [what is known as] cosplaying.

Cosplaying is essentially dressing up as a character or pop icon of some sort. You get points for really making an effort to act like the character. People cosplay at conventions & trade shows. There’s even cosplay porn (not a typo & not cosplay hentai, though there is cosplay hentai; yes, actual cosplay porn; between two people). (There’s A LOT more to it than that, but I want to distill the definition for all the readers who’ve no association & I don’t cosplay, so I’m none too qualified to be telling you lot anything about it with any authority).

Now historically, I’ve never cosplayed. And I have no intention whatsoever about picking up said habit. However, as more and more associates get into cosplay, or get better at it, I am increasingly asked, “Dark, why don’t you cosplay?” So I figured I’d write this, to go on the record, at least once.

I don’t cosplay, because I don’t want the attention. It’s not that I can’t make a costume or get into character. I’m in college studying Theatre; that’s 80% of what I do. I can handle the attention, I get it everday. But that’s the crook kids. I like the idea that for a few days out the year not every one has to shower me with attention. So that’s why I don’t cosplay.
